iPad Video Viewing vs. Desktop

We used to love to curl up with a good book in the evenings, but, based on Ooyala’s recent online video analytics it seems times have changed. It appears that people are now curling up with their iPads and watching online video in the evenings instead!

The online video analytics reveal that iPad video viewing peaks in the evening hours – a full third of iPad video plays were watched between 7:00pm and 11:00pm. Also, people like to start their day with an iPad in hand – another uptick in online video plays starts around 7:00am and trails off around 9:00am.

And, shocking but true…it clearly appears that people are watching online video while at their desk at work. Desktop video views are spread out more consistently throughout the day. (Let’s just say Swamp City Productions is all for those who sit at their desktops and watch video throughout the day!)

So, what can we take away from this research? First, it’s clear that

to reach iPad viewers you need an effective HTML5 video delivery solution. Second, it may make sense to alter messages and recommend viewing based on the type of device being used. For example, content recommended for an iPad may have more to do with home and family as that is when viewers may be more receptive.

A note about the data: The numbers presented here are taken from Ooyala’s database, which reflects the anonymized viewing behavior of over 100 million monthly unique viewers. The sample was taken on a single weekday in February 2012 for iPad video plays, worldwide. Time of day is reported in local time.
